Question 1

Part I. In the “ABO” blood group system the presence or absence of A and B antigens determines the four basic blood types. For laboratory purposes consider the ABO blood groups to be determined by a single pair of genes expressing codominance. Thus, the genotype of Type A blood may be homozygous (AA) or heterozygous (AO). The genotype of type B blood may be homozygous (BB ) or heterozygous (BO). Type O blood must be homozygous (OO). Type AB blood must have both A and B antigens (AB) with both being expressed through codominance.

Using the Punnett Square below determine the genotypes possible for the

offspring of a cross between Parent 1: a heterozygous Type A parent and Parent 2: a Type AB parent.

Using the given information, fill in the genotypes for the parents for this monohybrid cross: Parent 1:  x Parent 2:  .

Then use that information to complete the following Punnett square and then answer the following questions.

Remember Always write the dominant genes (capital letters) first. The parents genetic information (which form the gametes) goes in the first row and the first column (one letter per box). (See the GeneticsHandoutPunnett Squares.pdf for more information if needed.)
